BIOGRAPHY
Artist Olena Mosiyevych was born in Ukraine. After obtaining a PhD in Economics from Kyiv Mochyla Academy, Ukraine, the oldest University in Eastern Europe, she immersed herself in artmaking and art history. This included drawing and painting at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, and the study of Byzantine sacred art at Ukrainian Catholic University. Forseeing the Russian intervention, she moved to the United States, where she currently lives and works. She has presented her work worldwide, in Ukraine, Europe, the US, and Japan, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum and Museum of Ukrainian Painting. At the time of Mosiyevych’s departure, her work was exhibited at various museums across Ukraine, including the Kuindzhi Center of Contemporary Art in Mariupol. Due to the Russian invasion, her family has been dispersed across three countries and the location of some of these works is now unknown. Actively supporting Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression, she has used her art to raise funds and engender hope for thefuture.

Plasticity of line and its pulsating quality create the nexus of my method and meaning. Layers of impenetrablecolor become openwork, creating a shining effect that reproduces nature as I see it: an energetic state ofbeing, where, as in music, new rhythms of light and harmony emerge. The roots of my vision lie deep within Ukrainian culture. In particular, I am drawn to the deep and radiant spirituality of Byzantine and Ukrainian icons and the colorful melody of Ukrainian folk art, with its feet solidly planted in the land. My work isinfluenced by the Ukrainian avant-garde (Malevich) with its tendency to complex symbolism and their life-affirming ideas. Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, my family has been dispersed across three countries. In 2021, believing the Russian threat imminent, my husband and I and our two daughters moved to theUnited States. Living in Iowa, I am beginning to integrate the landscape of the Midwest into my work. I particularly find myself visualizing of American roads as a metaphor for constant movement and trees as a symbol of stability, protection and rooting with my new homeland. I am searching of harmony in studying of the interaction of colors in the form of linear vibrations. One of the questions I'm currently researching: How does a Ukrainian sensibility interact with the American Midwest to create a new perspective? How my Ukrainian eyes perceive middle America?

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY:
Actively supporting Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression, I have used my art to raise funds. In March, 2022 I initiated and coorganized an art auction in Nebraska that raised $26,000 to support Ukraine. Thanks to the generous support of local people, friends, and organizations, more than 150 attendees purchased art donated by more than 20 regional artists.
